The Future of Airlines

Note: This is a private article and only anyone with the link can see it.

Last night, I had the best flight of my life watching movies uninterrupted, without the cries of a devil baby, and feeling more comfortable than ever in my economy class seat!

…said no one ever.

If you’re a regular, non-millionaire, average Joe, your flying experience can probably be summed up with this picture:

Sorry gramps

Oh, and how could we forget about these?

Wait till I tell you how much these cost.

Entertainment has the power to teleport you into a completely different universe where you can be anyone you want and anywhere you wish. It can strangle you to submission, keeping you there for as long as it damn well likes. Indeed, the very best platform for movies can completely morph reality.

And yet, where is this in the airline industry?

Shouldn’t an industry fundamentally invested in the proliferation of new experiences and arguably the greatest of pastimes, travel, look towards giving its passengers the best, latest and most memorable experience on board?

Should you enter the aircraft feeling tired and edgy, or excited and ready?

At SkyLights, we believe that airline travel should not be a means to an end.

By this, we mean that crying babies, interrupted attention, and poor quality entertainment don’t have to be tolerated.

SkyLights provides Premium Immersive Cinema on planes as passenger Inflight entertainment.

What does that mean?

Well, it means that for starters, you’re no longer sitting in an aircraft seat anymore. You’re enjoying a movie in your own Private Theater.

And I’m not exaggerating.

We provide immersive headsets that leverage the latest Virtual Reality to enable passengers to enjoy the newest 2D and 3D movies in total isolation from the rest of the cabin.

I want you to imagine that you’re on a flight to South Africa. Cruising at 30,000 feet. You want to watch a movie. Sure, you could settle for this:

But here’s, quite literally, what SkyLights offers you:

Better? Thought so.

So far, inflight tests (on around 100 flights) reveal the following encouraging feedback:

  • 95% average satisfaction rates
  • 86% of users ready to recommend
  • 4h average usage time

Let me translate those first two statistics:

  • 95% off users walked off that airplane feeling great. When was the last time you ever saw people exiting planes with genuine pleasure on their face?
  • 86% users verbally told someone about their awesome experience on a plane. When was the last time you heard anything non-negative about your friend’s flight?

In a world in which most consumers make their flying decisions based on the sole variable of price, the ability to go above and beyond in providing great entertainment is invaluable.

Now, if you were to think that SkyLights solely provides and distributes these headsets to airlines, you’d be wrong; we offer a turnkey solution that includes hardware, software, ground operations and content, allowing for an incredibly smooth implementation for airlines.

Here’s how it works:

That’s our whole production process. Expensive?

Well, consider this – and get ready, because I’m about to blow your mind.

The Airline Industry hates embedded seat screens more than you do. They can cost up to $20,000 each, and they’re so heavy that the industry spends close to 1 billion dollars in extra fuel just to fly them around.

On the other hand, airlines can currently offer SkyLights at little to no net cost.

If we were to graph some sort of matrix that depicted both passenger and airline priorities within the scope of the whole travel process, it would look something like this:

This showcases exactly why SkyLights is targeting a strong, tangible pain point affecting the industry.

We’re lucky to be living in an age where such tremendous leaps are being made in technology, and here at SkyLights, we intend to leverage this and revolutionize the flying experience.

See you aboard 😉
